ALL OF US PRE-BABY BOOMERS . . . BORN BEFORE 1945 We are survivors! Consider for just a moment some of the changes we have witnessed since our birth. We were born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, plastic, silicon chips, silicon implants, contact lenses, Frisbees, and the ubiquitous pill. Now don't forget radar, credit cards, ATM Cards, split atoms, laser beams, ball point pens and PEZ dispensers! Remember your parents comments about times before, pantyhose, dishwashers, clothes dryers, electric blankets, room air conditioners, drip dry clothes and what about that old personal computer? We married first, THEN lived together, what a concept! In our time, closets were for clothes, not for coming out of. Bunnies were small rabbits and rabbits were not Volkswagens. A meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. We thought fast food was what you ate during Lent and outer space was back of the Ramsey Theater, or the Warner Theater in Ridgewood. We happened before house-husbands, gay rights, computer dating, dual careers, and commuter marriages. We arrived before daycare centers, group therapy and nursing homes. We never heard of Stereo FM radio, 8 track tape decks, cassette tape decks, CD's, Video Cassette Recorders, DVD's or thier players, electronic typewriters, artificial hearts, heart transplants, word processors, yogurt, guys wearing earrings (don't forget, left is right). For us, the pre- baby boomer generation, time-sharing meant togetherness . . . not computers or condominiums. A chip was piece of wood and some people refered to wood kindling as "faggots". I remember my Mom asking me to go outside and gather some "Faggots" for the fire. Hardware meant hardware and software wasn't even a word and an Apple was something we ate! Back when we were "younger" "made in Japan" meant junk and the term "make out" referred to how you did on your exam. McDonald's, KFC and instant coffee was unheard of. We hit the scene when there were 5 & 10 cent stores (F.W.Woolworth & W.T. Grant, remember???), for a nickel you could ride a street car or make a phone call, buy a Pepsi or enough stamps to mail one letter and two postcards. In our day grass was mowed, coke was a cold drink & pot was something you used to cook with. We arrived before sex changes, toll roads, digital camaras and MP3's. We made do with what we had and were the last generation that was so dumb as to think you needed a husband to have a baby. WE HAVE SURVIVED! Could there be a better reason to give thanks for all of our good fortunes.
